Claudio MELCHIORRI was born in Genova, on 23 October 1959. After the military duties, he received the Laurea Degree in Electronic Engineering in 1985 and the PhD. in 1990, both from the University of Bologna. Since 1985, he has been with DEIS, University of Bologna where he became Research Associate in 1990, Associate Professor in 1998, and, since November 2001, Full Professor in Industrial Robotics.

At DEIS, he has participated to several research projects in robotics and automation. His research interests include advanced robotic manipulation (dexterous hands, redundant manipulators, manipulability measures, tactile and force/torque sensors, telemanipulation, haptic interfaces) and automatic control (digital control, non linear control, hardware/software control architectures).

He has been appointed as Adjunct Associate in Engineering at the Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Florida, Gainesville, Florida, USA, in the Fall Semester 1988 and as Visiting Scientist at the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, MIT, Cambridge, MA, USA, periods in 1990 and 1991.

He is member of the IEEE since 1992 (Robotics and Automation Society and Control Systems Society), of the IFAC Technical Committee on Robotics and Automation, and of ANIPLA.

He has contributed to the organization of several international conferences and events (summer schools, workshops, bilateral meeting). He is reviewer for the main international journals in the robotics and automatic control areas, and is member of the Editorial Board of the International Journal on Robotics and Autonomous Systems.

He is author or co-author of more than 100 scientific publications, of 3 books on digital control (Sistemi di Controllo Digitale, Esculapio Ed., 1995, Controllo dei processi: schemi di lezione ed esercizi, Pitagora, 1996, Traiettorie per azionamenti elettrici, Esculapio, 2000) and is co-editor of 4 books on robotics (ERNET European Robotics Network: Structure, Scope, and First Results, Pitagora, 1994, Modelling and Control of Mechanisms and Robots, World Scientific Publisher, 1996, Advances in Robotics - The ERNET perspective, World Scientific Publishing, 1996, Modelling and Control of Mechanical Systems, Imperial College Press, 1997).
