|The rapid progress of internet-based networking technologies enables a remote access to
engineering laboratory equipment and instruments.
Since control engineering education should combine theory with practice, this feature can
be especially useful to provide students with an Internet access to various experimental
setups located in control laboratories.
During automatic control courses, students should achieve knowledge and skills about
control systems theory in order to design controller able to fulfill some required
Experimentation of their developed controllers on real-world plants is then a fundamental
educational feature: a student can observe the resulting dynamics and make themselves
aware of some physical phenomena that are impossible to simulate or just difficult to
Furthermore an experimental approach to explain usual control system benchmarks
could indeed improve also the motivation of students, not more constrained to look only
at simulations as result of their work.
The aim of a Remote Lab is then to render accessible laboratories resources at any time
and from any place, in order to let students (e.g. part time students or professionals)
carry out laboratory experiments remotely eliminating the need to be in place.
The goal of this paper is to present the experience of University of Bologna in
developing its own remote lab.|
